Peace Country Seniors ignored by liberal government Warkentin Disappointed by Liberal Cuts for Long Standing Seniors’ Program in the Peace Country
Chris Warkentin, Member of Parliament for Grande Prairie – Mackenzie expressed his disappointment with Liberal government’s decision to cut funds from Peace Country seniors.
The Liberal government has drastically reduced funding for the New Horizons for Seniors Program in the Peace Country. Since 2010, the New Horizons for Seniors Program has provided an average of $110,600 to numerous seniors’ projects, infrastructure, and facilities across the Peace Country. In 2016, the Liberal government announced a grand total of $43,200 for just two projects in the Peace Country.
“Peace Country seniors have been left high and dry by the Liberal government’s administration of the New Horizons for Seniors Programs,” Warkentin said. “Seniors’ organizations across the Peace Country need this additional funding to help fund repairs, maintenance and programs.”
“Providing funds for these essential initiatives for seniors is not a partisan political issue,” Warkentin noted. “In a rural region like ours, it is outrageous that only two projects would be funded when in the past eight or nine groups a year would receive funding.”
“While the Liberal government is promising a reckless $30 billion deficit budget this year, seniors are feeling the pinch,” Warkentin said. “They’re taxing Peace Country residents more, but they’re giving less to our local seniors.”
Officials for the Minister of Families, Children, and Social Development were asked if there would be any further funding for Peace Country seniors. They deferred to the list of projects on their website. http://www.esdc.gc.ca/eng/seniors/funding/approved/community_2016/alberta.shtml
