Chris Warkentin, Member of Parliament for Grande Prairie – Mackenzie, joined Conservative MPs in supporting Opposition Leader Andrew Scheer’s proposed policy to provide relief for new parents.
“Conservatives know that families often struggle to make ends meet following the birth of a child,” Warkentin said. “That is why Andrew is using his first economic policy to provide support and financial relief for new parents.”
Currently, Canadians taking advantage of EI maternity benefits and EI parental programs still pay federal income tax on the money they receive.
“Welcoming a child into a young family is an incredibly special moment for so many parents,” said Scheer. “Canada’s Conservatives understand that the government shouldn’t be taxing the time parents take to be with their children during those important early years.”
The Supporting New Parents Act will create a federal non-refundable income tax credit for any income earned under these programs.
“This important bill will give Canadian parents – who make so many sacrifices for their new children, including a leave from work – a break by eliminating the federal tax on parental leave benefits,” said Scheer.
Canadians know that the Trudeau government tax increases will raise taxes on 2.7 million families over the next few years. That means that by 2019, more than 90% of middle-class families will pay more tax than under the previous Conservative government.
“Our Conservative Party has a positive vision for Canada,” Warkentin said. “This includes supporting hardworking new parents.”
